Pumpkin Pie Spice is probably our most-used and loved baking spice blend. All fall and winter long, and sometimes in the warmer months, we add a spoonful to just about everything. I started buying it a few years ago when I saw it at Trader Joe’s. I remembered my grandmother’s spice cupboard always had a small jar and it brought back some tender memories. So I grabbed a jar. Then went back for more. A pinch here or there in pies and cookies is not good enough for me – I use it by the tablespoonful! Beyond muffins and baked goods, we love it in oatmeal, sprinkled on fruit and yogurt, in smoothies, on toast, mixed into pie, ice cream, or whipped cream. We are using it all fall and winter long, and sometimes in the warmer weather too. It’s really good in hot chocolate, in case you were wondering. Because I use it so much, I decided to come up with a homemade pumpkin pie spice blend to suit our tastes.
Throughout Internetland there are dozens of recipes for homemade pumpkin pie spice. They all seem to have cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves in common, which is great. But I kicked it up a notch, taking a few notes from the Trader Joe’s blend we like, and added dried orange peel, white pepper, cardamom, and allspice. I wish you could smell it through the screen! It smells just like you hope it would – warm and toasty, and like Grandma’s kitchen. I took it around to let everyone in my family take a sniff and the unanimous vote was for making apple pie as soon as possible. There’s plenty in the jar, so it should last through several pies, batches of muffins, and pancakes before I need to make more. :)
