Did you miss me last week? I went on a last minute trip to Williamsburg, Virginia and it was soooo much fun. I’ve always wanted to visit Colonial Williamsburg, but we never made it down there when we lived on the East Coast.
Candace and I were walking down the street and I saw this garden and told her we had to stop. I’m just starting to resurrect my garden at home, so I was fascinated by the things that would have been used in Colonial gardens and the types of vegetables that were growing. It was truly beautiful.
The structures made from branches were for peas or beans to climb. In the garden I saw tons of leafy greens growing, broccoli, cauliflower, turnips, cabbages, peas, beans, onions, beets, carrots, and more.
I’ve seen the wooden window boxes before. I’d love to construct a few in my garden someday. I love the way they look. Here’s a peek at what was growing inside on of the window boxes:
I also loved these pretty glass domes (also called a cloche). I’ve seen my neighbors use this method in their gardens. I love when things can be useful and pretty at the same time.
They had a little shop adjacent to the garden. They had heirloom seeds for sale as well. Definitely a favorite stop on my way through the town.

Lovely. Just lovely.
Oh! I have SO many happy memories of Colonial Williamsburg. I grew up in Virginia, and this reminds me of just how much I miss it.
We took our whole family to Williamsburg a couple years ago and absolutely fell in love! We had a great time in the gardens & my kids got a real kick out of watering with a thumb pot…I think they would have spent all day there if they could. As it is, I think we spent an hour just watering! Now we have one of those thumb pots of our own.
love the glass domes!!
Ahhh, Ilove Williamsburg!
