The Strawberry Pickin’s

I live pretty close to Manhattan. While to some New Yorkers, that seems like “upstate” it’s still pretty urban for the suburbs. I love–no adore–the chance to get away to the “country” for a day.

We drove up to Secor Strawberry Farm in Wappingers Falls, NY, which is about 1 1/2 hours from where we live. It was a cool, cloudy day. Perfect for picking strawberries, although we missed tasting the warmth of the sun in the freshly picked berries.

I was glad I waited for my husband to get home from work–he spent an hour chasing my kids while I picked berries. The berries were small and juicy–just like I like them.

My husband found the best ones though–they were the ripest and sweetest of the bunch.

All together we ended up picking a little over 6 lbs. We would have gone for the whole 10 lbs. our box could hold, but it started pouring rain.

Next month Secor’s blueberries will be ready to pick. We picked there last July and the blueberries were marvelous. I can’t wait!

Check here to see if there are any pick-your-own farms in your area.

  1. it is so much fun to go fruit picking… and you are lucky to live in NY state where there are so many rural areas and farms… i love that.

  2. You just can’t beat a good u-pick place. I used to go to them all the time when I lived in canada. I have no idea of where any are over here and I guess I wouldn’t have much time for it with my job and all these days. But I sure have enjoyed looking at your berries this morning and can’t wait to see what you do with them!
